About Silver Skylark Handmade Silver Jewellery
The inspiration for my silver jewellery comes from the shapes and patterns of the natural world: the satisfying spiral of an ammonite, the solidity of a lucky pebble with a hole in it (a hagstone), the texture of cuttlefish bone, the ripples in the sand left by waves on a beach.
As someone who’s enjoyed working with my hands ever since I was a boy, the practical side of being a silversmith – working with tools, casting silver – is very appealing to me. The alchemy of melting silver, pouring it into a mould I’ve made and seeing the final results is a process that I find magical each time I do it. I enjoy exploring different techniques, such as sand casting, a historic way of working of silver. Sand casted pieces have a substantial weight and tactile quality, which makes them very satisfying to feel and hold. My latest pendants have been made using cuttlefish casting. Each piece is unique and uses cuttlefish bones I found on a Cornish beach, capturing their distinctive wavy patterning and texture in silver. I enjoy creating different textures in my pieces through techniques such as hammering with varied, adapted tools depending on the effect I want to create.
I work with 925 or 999 silver and all my pieces are assayed by the Goldsmith’s Company Assay Office in London and hallmarked.
